It is often said that to keep a healthy mind, you need a healthy body
One gym in Preston looks at both aspects together, helping to combat the debilitating dark cloud which can often consume too many people.
Titan Strength Academy, based in Marsh Lane Business Centre, offers mindset and motivational thinking, alongside physical training.
I spoke to one of the owners, Tiarnan Carlin, about the gym's ethos and how retraining your mind and breaking bad habits can improve your emotional wellbeing.
He told me: “There is too much focus on what is wrong, rather than what is right. If we focus too much on the illness, that is the only thing that will grow. So we need to focus on developing as a person positively."
He discusses the fact we tend to collect bad habits and jump into the same thought processes and react the same way in stressful environments.
For example, after a tough day at work, we grab a beer or a sugary doughnut to make ourselves feel better.
But that does not necessarily help us.
Instead, we could go for a walk or a run.
We should also try visualisation, affirmations and reassessments.
Tiarnan says he gets people to write down three to five things every day that made them feel good and then the same for bad. Over time, it gets harder to list the things that made them feel bad. Once you’ve made a conscious act to write these things down, your subconscious is stopping things that make you feel bad. You recognise that you don’t want to do that anymore.
